My Federal Journey: Why I Built the Resource I Wish I Had Before Federal Prison

When I was going through presentence, I had questions. A lot of them.

• How much time will I actually serve?
• How do First Step Act credits really work?
• What is Good Conduct Time?
• When could I go to a halfway house or home confinement?
• What happens when I first arrive at federal prison?
• What is a team meeting?
• And most importantly: When am I actually coming home?

I searched online looking for answers.

There was information out there, but I often found myself reading complicated explanations, scattered discussions and information that didn't answer the practical questions I actually had.

I didn't just want to know what the law said.

I wanted to understand what was going to happen to me.

That experience eventually became the reason I created this platform.

From Presentence to Federal Prison

Before incarceration, everything can feel uncertain.

You may have a sentence measured in months, but that doesn't necessarily tell you what your actual journey will look like.

Then you begin hearing terms such as:

FSA. GCT. PATTERN. Team meetings. Earned Time Credits. RRC. Second Chance Act. Home confinement.

If you've never been through the federal system, it can feel like learning another language.

Families are trying to understand it too.

Your spouse may be trying to figure out when you could return home. Your children may want to know how long you'll be gone. You may be trying to make financial, employment and family decisions without understanding your actual timeline.

I experienced that uncertainty myself.

And eventually, I started learning how the pieces fit together.

What I Learned Inside

Once I entered federal custody, I started paying close attention to the process.

I watched how assessments worked.

I learned about team meetings.

I watched FSA credits accumulate.

I watched projected release dates change.

And I started calculating timelines.

Eventually, I wasn't only calculating my own.

I helped several other incarcerated people work through their timelines as well. Comparing estimates with what actually happened helped me better understand the practical side of a system that had seemed incredibly confusing before I entered it.

That experience planted an idea:

What if there were one place where someone facing federal incarceration could understand the journey before having to live through it?

That's Why This Platform Exists

This platform is being built for the person sitting at home after sentencing searching the internet late at night.

It's for the wife trying to determine when her husband might come home.

It's for the husband trying to understand what happens after his wife self-surrenders.

It's for the mother or father trying to understand their child's federal sentence.

And it's for the person already incarcerated who simply wants to understand:

Where am I in my sentence, and what's next?

The goal is to make complicated federal incarceration and reentry information easier to understand.

Start With Your Federal Time

One of the first tools I'm building is an FSA/GCT calculator designed to help eligible users estimate how different components of a federal sentence may affect their timeline.

The calculator isn't the Bureau of Prisons, and an estimate from this website isn't an official release-date determination.

But it can help people understand the moving pieces and ask better questions about their own circumstances.

And the calculator is only the beginning.

My Federal Journey

I want this platform to eventually help people understand the entire journey:

Presentence → Self-Surrender → Federal Prison → FSA & GCT → RRC → Home Confinement → Release → Reentry

We'll talk about the things I desperately wanted to understand before I went through them.

What happens during your first weeks in federal prison?

How do FSA credits work?

Why can a projected release date change?

How does halfway-house placement work?

What should you expect when transitioning to home confinement?

How can you prepare for employment and life after incarceration?

And what can families do to prepare for someone coming home?

Some articles will explain official rules and policies. Others will discuss real-world experiences and practical lessons.

I'll make the distinction clear because official BOP policy and an individual's experience aren't always the same thing.

This Is About More Than Counting Days

There's another side of this journey that calculators can't measure.

Fear.

Family.

Faith.

Relationships.

Employment.

Finances.

Starting over.

And figuring out what you're going to do with your life when this chapter ends.

That's why this platform won't stop at calculating release dates.

The long-term goal is to build resources for people before, during and after federal incarceration.

Because eventually the question changes.

At first, you're asking:

“When am I coming home?”

Then one day, you're home.

And the question becomes:

“What do I do next?”

I want this platform to help answer both.
